The Sanctuary

    • Charis Homes built this 4,294-square-foot custom home in North Canton, Ohio, to the high performance criteria of the U.S. Department of Energy Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) program.
    • The roof is covered with a synthetic underlayment and ice and water shield in the valleys and eaves, adding durability under the 30-year architectural shingles.
    • An ENERGY STAR-labeled refrigerator and dishwasher add to electricity and water savings in the efficient home.
    • The U-0.17 triple-pane windows provide ample light while keeping unwanted heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer to a minimum.
    • All of the home's electric lighting is provided by highly efficient LEDs while large triple-pane windows also bring in ample daylight.
    • Custom formed concrete footers provide an interior and exterior drainage system around the ICF basement walls to help ensure a dry basement.
    • A dimpled plastic drain mat wraps the below-grade ICF walls to help prevent frost damage.
    • Garage walls are insulated with batts, while 11-inch-thick ICF walls wrap the living spaces in R-50 of thermal protection.
    • The combination boiler provides efficient space heating via a fan-coil central air handler and radiant flooring in the basement.
    • A .95 efficient gas tankless combination boiler provides domestic hot water and heats a coil in the air handler, which provides heat to the home via small-diameter (2-inch) high-velocity supply ducts. A heat pump provides cooling.
