Wickenburg Ranch

    • Mandalay Homes built this 2,915-square-foot production home in Wickenburg, Arizona, to the high performance criteria of the U.S. Department of Energy Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) program.
    • Mandalay Homes insulates its attics on the underside of the roof deck with spray foam. To ensure that the air barrier and insulation is continuous and leak-proof, Mandalay Homes worked with a plumbing and mechanical engineer to eliminate roof penetrations by using gable end venting and Studor vents. This reduces the risk of leaks, speeds roofing installs, and increases the amount of roof space available for solar panels.
    • The highly efficient home is expected to save its homeowners $1,500 per year when compared to a home built to code, or $2,200 per year when solar panels are added. Mandalay Homes now offers solar energy storage along with solar panels, enabling homeowners to cut their energy bills to zero with half the solar panels it would have taken without the storage option.
    • ENERGY STAR appliances and water-saving plumbing fixtures add to energy and water savings in the efficient home.
    • Mandalay installed double-pane windows with airtight insulated frames that are aluminum-clad on the exterior and wood on the interior with low-emissivity coatings that let in light and keep out heat.
    • All of the plumbing fixtures in the home are EPA WaterSense compliant to help conserve water in this arid climate.
    • A 50-gallon heat pump water heater provides all of the home's hot water. A compact plumbing design and a smart recirculation pump help speed hot water to the tap, reducing wait times and water usage.
    • Beneath the stucco siding, the advance-framed 2-by-6, 24-inch on-center walls are filled with spray foam and then sheathed with rigid foam, which provides a continuous thermal break around the home.
    • Several inches of spray foam lines the attic ceiling, sheltering the HVAC ducts from the intense Arizona sun and providing a temperate storage area.
    • The high-performance windows are properly flashed to keep out rain, drafts, dust, and insects.
