Newburgh Custom

    • Greenhill Contracting built this 2,512-square-foot custom home in Newburgh, New York, to the high performance criteria of the U.S. Department of Energy Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) program.
    • A 10.21-kW array of PV panels sits atop the south-facing roof of the home. These panels reduce the home's annual electric bill from a projected $3,930 to about $90 per year, or less than $8/month.
    • The simple rectangular shape of the two-story plus basement home contributes to its energy efficiency and fits in with the region's Dutch colonial architectural style.
    • ENERGY STAR appliances and LED lighting add to the energy savings in the efficient home.
    • Triple-paned windows help keep temperatures consistent and comfortable inside the well-insulated home.
    • Insulated concrete forms create a sturdy base for the basement floor slab, which is poured over 4.5 inches of closed-cell spray foam.
    • The unvented attic is insulated on the underside of the roof deck with 10.5 inches of open-cell spray foam plus 2.5 inches of closed-cell spray foam to provide a protected space for the HVAC equipment.
    • The ICF blocks are stacked to form 11-inch-thick walls with reinforced concrete cores and layers of continuous rigid foam.
    • A heat pump water heater with a 50-gallon tank and an efficiency of 3.53 EF is located in the mechanical room, which is within the conditioned area of the home. A central manifold distribution system speeds the hot water to faucets.
    • A ducted high-efficiency mini-split heat pump provides heating and cooling with an efficiency rating of 9.8 HSPF, 16 SEER.
