The Meritage

    • C & B Custom Homes built this 1,628-square-foot custom home in Clarkdale, Arizona, to the high performance criteria of the U.S. Department of Energy Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) program.
    • Deep overhangs help reduce unwanted solar heat gain in the hot, dry climate.
    • All of the appliances in this energy-efficient home carry the ENERGY STAR label.
    • Faucets and showerheads are WaterSense-labeled for water savings.
    • To help ensure indoor air quality, all of the interior paint is rated zero VOC-emitting, as is the cabinetry, any adhesives are Indoor Air Quality-certified, and the hard surface flooring is UL Greenguard Gold-certified.
    • The double-pane windows have low-emissivity coatings and an argon gas fill between the panes to boost their insulating value to a U factor of 0.24.
    • The 2-by-6 value-engineered walls are framed at 16 inches on center and wrapped with house wrap and R-5.1 of rigid foam sheathing before filling the walls with spray foam.
    • The rigid foam sheathing is taped at the seams and covered with metal lathe before installing a type "F" acrylic modified stucco system.
    • Seven inches (R-25) of open-cell spray foam blankets the underside of the unvented roof, providing a temperate place for the HVAC ducts.
    • More than 5 inches (R-23) of open-cell spray foam fills the cavities of the 2-by-6 walls.
