Glacier Club Modern Home

    • Mantell-Hecathorn Builders built this 4,937-square-foot custom home in Durango, Colorado, to the high performance criteria of the U.S. Department of Energy Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) program.
    • The large home will have big views and small heating bills thanks to a highly insulated and air-sealed building envelope.
    • ENERGY STAR appliances contribute to energy and water savings in the efficient home.
    • Automated window blinds can be controlled by switch, by timer, or remotely to allow in views but block out summer heat when no one is home.
    • A high-efficiency wall-hung boiler supplies hot water for the radiant floor tubing that heats all three floors.
    • Advanced LED lighting supplements the natural light that fills the home.
    • Extensive trenching was installed under the site to drain away surface water and snow melt to minimize erosion damage to the site and increase building durability.
    • Rather than just installing ice-and-water shield in the valleys and at the eaves, the builder covered the entire roof deck with it, helping make the roof assembly especially impervious to storm damage.
    • A high-density spray foam insulates and air-seals the wall cavities and also adds strength to the structure. Fiberglass will be added to completely fill the 2-by-6 walls, which will then be wrapped on the outside with 2 inches of rigid foam for a very substantial R-38 total wall insulation value.
    • Redundant air-sealing measures including spray foam, canned foam, caulk, and tape to keep out drafts and chill.
